Technical support scam warning

After receiving a call today from a man concerned that is mother had become victim of an online scam, I did a little investigative work to check out the source of his troubles- Live-Technician.

In general, I find that if people are suspicious enough about an email/website/phone call/travelling salesman (or an offer seems too good to be true) to call the Centre in the first place, it most likely is a scam.

But, just to confirm I first called the hotline (1-866-216-8304) and very bluntly asked them if indeed they were a scam. The operator told me that she would be able to answer my question once I gave her remote access to my computer. Politely, I declined and asked her more about her services.

She then hung up on me.

To find out more, I looked through the website, checking out what they offer along with any other information that would lead me to know for sure whether or not they are a real company.

From the blog that was clearly inserted into Google translate to the unsecured login page and the “free” yearly service that costs $239.99, I determined that it was a scam.

This is how the scam works:

The problem starts when a victim becomes concerned about a technical problem with his or her computer-It could be anything from a printer malfunction to a blocked email address or a threat of a virus. The victim then Googles whatever their problem may be in order to find a solution. Instead, what they find is a link for technical support that claims to fix whatever problem you may have through remotely accessing your computer.

Remote access allows the ‘support person’ to make changes on your computer- including accessing your files and downloading viruses. This tool is extremely helpful if the person is professional and trustworthy, but potentially dangerous if they have other motives.

There are several ways scams like these make money:

1)      This “service” in particular charges over $200 to remotely access your computer one time and offers a yearly subscription for unlimited access for products that normally cost less than $50 per year.
2)      Once your computer has been remotely accessed by a fraudster, they can steal any information you have on your computer including: private work related information, banking information, passwords, photos and other information you definitely do not want accessed by a stranger.
Come to think about it… perhaps Carly Rae fell victim to one of these scams…
3)      Once the fraudster has gathered your personal information, they can make more money by selling it online to a third party.

Here are a couple ways to discover whether a website you visited is fraudulent or not:

  •   Google the name of the company and the tech support number- If several links come up promoting the website that are from blogs, forums or any other site that is free or easily built than it could be fake.  Try typing ‘scam’ after the name and see if anyone else has reported problems with the company.
  •    Read through the website- does it seem as though the writing was translated through an online translation tool?
  •    If there is a section of the website that requests that you log in, look at the address bar. The address should begin with ‘https’ beside a symbol of a padlock. These features indicate that it is a secured website and is safe to access.
  •   Hover over any links provided on the website. If they lead towards a social media account with no content and a few inactive followers, it could be a sign of fraud.
The risk of identity theft increases significantly when others access the information stored on your computer. Allowing someone to have remote access to your files is like giving your car keys to a stranger. Avoid this at all costs and if you ever need technical support, go through an established and reputable business.

  1. I called live technician few days back, as my Wireless HP Printer was not working and i did show it to local technician here in Charlotte as well but he could not fix it. Then i decided to call Live Technician as one of my friend referred me to them. These guys (Live Technician) are just awesome , they fixed my printer in 20 mins even though i didnt have a CD i got with the printer , they are so professional and trained that they dont even need a CD to install the Drivers.

    AWESOME JOB LIVE TECHNICIAN !!

  2. Contrary to the above post, this company is a total scam. They make you believe that you have a computer problem that is complicated to fix when in fact you have no problem at all. They won't do anything until they get their charge over the phone, then they want access to your computer. I have an elderly client that was scammed this way by them, when she realized this she cancelled her credit card, luckily she did it just in time because they tried to put several unauthorized charges through on her card. We then cancelled the entire transaction and put a freeze on her cerdit report just to be safe, now they are calling her and harassing her for the original cancelled charge. Now we have to call a real professional to scan the computer to take off whatever they put on remotely and change all passwords.

    1. i don,t understand the motto of these companies . I believe there is no free lunch in this world , if there is a problem i have to pay . But this is insane if somebody is charging us without any reason. First they create an issue then they ask money to fix it . If we don,t pay they leave the created issue as it is . I am also a victim of such company like live-technician . May god give them a better way to earn money .

  4. In early June I received a notice that my password had been changed 2 weeks prior. I went to Google Support and called a number listed. That number put me in contact with Live Technicians.

I quickly learned that there are 2 problems in trying to communicate and receive their assistance; [1] their English is really broken and, for me, extremely difficult to determine what they’re saying and, [2] – It takes the better part of a day to have them “fix” any issues that come up requiring me to be near the computer in case they need to call during the process.

During this initial conversation, I was told that I had a number of issues “in my computer” and that they have a software program they would install for $289.99 that would protect me from that point on. Additionally, they would fix all the issues currently in place. I paid the money.

About the third week in June [5-6 weeks later], I get another call from this same person saying they’ve discovered issues in my computer, that it would take about two hours to fix and they would call me back when it’s done. I asked how that could be and he said something about some security software in the apple system had expired and I would need to cover that with what’s called PROTECTOR, for an additional $148.00. I argued that I was told I was covered by the first $289.99 but was told that, now that the Apple software had expired – [never did learn the specifics] THIS would protect me from this point on. I asked if there would ever be another attempt to sell me more stuff in the future and he made it very clear that with the customer ID number he was about to give me, that couldn’t happen – That if ANYONE under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES asked for money, I simply give them my customer ID number and that would take care of it. I paid the money.

Today, 7.6.13 – just barely three weeks after the second call/purchase of additional protection, I received another call from the same person saying they have discovered some issues that need to be taken care of – that he would need access to my computer via TEAM VIEWER, and that it would take about 2 hours - I interrupted him and reminded him that I was not going to buy anything, he said no one will try and sell me anything.

It wasn’t more than ten minutes later when a second person called advising me that
I had issues in my computer and he was the technician who would be working on them – I asked why he was calling me because I already knew about the issues and that I would receive a call when they were fixed to say I could begin using my computer again – He said that I needed to pay $10.00 for the service. I said I won’t pay it – He said something to the affect that I had to and it was only $10.00. I said I’m not paying ten cents and I want to talk with the person who originally called me – All he could respond with was I need to pay ten dollars. I said no and hung up the phone. Within a minute or so, the first guy called me back and I told him I will not pay one more penny to anyone for anything having to do with Live Technicians and that I think this whole thing is a scam set up to hustle people out of their money and hung up the phone.

It takes me about 30 seconds to get from the living room to my studio – When I sat down at the computer I had this message:

    “Dear Customer
    Your computer has been fixed
The computer is good to go now
If you have any issues please call us on 1-888-389-7614.

You may use the computer now
    Thank you
    Technician team”.

What had originally been projected as a two hour process now took less than a few minutes … ?

All things considered, I believe the foundational issue is that: Google Support is a sham – I say that for two reasons:
[1] – There’s no way Google is not aware of this situation and,
[2] – Google has to [somehow] be benefitting by allowing this to continue.

  5. Stevev Vonderahe October 20 2013,
I was looking at my Gmail account trying to log in when it said I could not log in. There was a Google support number so I called it. Some guy from India answered and said he was a third party able to solve Google problems. It sounded ok. He showed me my computer had been hacked by someone and I needed to install Live Spywear, Live Antihacker and a Virus protection. The Spywear is kicked out as a virus and doesn't work.. The anti HACKER IS BOGUS. The only thing I got was AVG Virus Prtection for $289. They say I have 24/7 technical support but everytime you call them they want to acess your computer again and charge you more for bogus fixes. Watch out for LIVE TECHNICIAN. DONT TALK TO THEM. THEY ALSO COULD BE IN IT FOR IDENTIDY THEFT.

  6. OMG I just went thru a horrible experience with Live Tech also-These Scammers tell you something to scare you. First I could not open my computer on the front of the lap top it says contact these people-I thought ok an they will remotely give me a new password. What I got was six hours of trying to fix my computer an 180 dollars gone, After they "fixed my computer" I went on to check some things then a miracle happened the cursor took off an went an did something I did not let it do-I was pissed-Called them back they said O No we did not touch your computer-Well I did not have it zip across my screen an close windows out-I was in the middle of school work. I was upset. They assured me that everything was fine an not to worry please call if anything else came up. I would not leave my computer on or on line if I was not in front of it-By the fourth day I could not stand it more problems I called my original people which I should have done in the first place they cleaned it all up changed passwords-Now I went to get a refund of my money -four days at $180. they will kindly give back half 90 of which they make you agree to not dispute the partial return. I told them while they did this to me I thought they were scammers but the threats of on line dangers an they said porno of me was being sent out an my bank was hacked into-on and on-OMG. Stop this insanity-I went to what my computer told me to do-Microsoft live from there I don't know how it got to be a scam-I will not trust Microsoft again-Thanx for listening-YES LARGE SCAM!

  11. This happened to me as well. I received a large flashing, urgent message on my computer to call 1883897614 immediately as a problem had been detected. After that my story is pretty much the same as the others posted here. 6 weeks later I receive another call that I will receive a refund for the service - no explanation - just needed access to my computer. The screen went black for several minutes - to allow the transfer to take place they said. What they were doing was removing funds from one of my accounts to my checking account to make it look like I was given a refund. However, instead of 500 they transfered 5000 and begged me to help them out as they made an irreversible error. There was some strange request to buy 4500 worth of iTunes gift cards that would help him rectify his error - how this would do that, was not explained. By now I was angry and confused by the weirdness of it all. Luckily my bank caught the unusual activity and froze my account. And even though this happened over 2 months ago - they are still calling me on 'unknown' phone numbers. I hang up on them.
